Palm Pixi Plus Review
- March 12, 2010
4.0

The Pixi Plus is much larger than one would expect for bringing so many features to the table yet remaining so light. Measuring in at 4.37 inches long and 2.17 inches think, the device weighs a mere 3.3 ounces. The weight seems to be among the lighter devices in the industry and could quite possibly be the lightest (At least in the smartphone industry). The display found on the hand set is 2.6 inch LCD display with 320 x 400 pixels. Like I said before if you’re comparing this to an Nexus One of course the screen is not impressive, however for first time smartphone users that aren’t trying to break the bank you will be more than content with your display on the Pixi Plus.

Pros: WebOS and it’s ability to multi-task, incredibly light weight and ease of use, new Wi-Fi and mobile hot spot(very very cool) features along with 3G and GPS capabilities make the new Pixi Plus a formidable competitor in the smartphone world.

Cons: Not as powerful as one would hope, some of the processes seem a bit laggy at times, the lack of an expansion slot, and the behind the times 2.0 megapixel camera aren’t exactly favorable.

The exterior of the device is simple and bland to say the least, the Pixi Plus definitely went with the less is more approach on the outside. With not to much going on you will find a 3.5mm headphone jack and power button at the top of the handset. The volume rocker and microUSB charging port are located on the right side of the device. Of course on the front side of the Pixi Plus you will find the display and the full QWERTY keyboard as well as the touch navigation area. Packed in on the back of the device are the flash, 2 megapixel camera, and the speakers.

The Pixi Plus ships with webOS 1.3.5.1, with the upgrade to webOS 1.4 coming soon. The simplicity found in webOS is far superior than other operating systems in the mobile market. It offers multitasking for busy users, and cloud computing with Synergy. The built in search option of the device is really helpful, from the homer screen a user can search a query, and the Pixi with automatically search the entire phones programs and contacts. If the device finds no match for the search, it will then lean on Google, Google Maps, Wiki, and Twitter to help find the answers.

Of course the Pixi Plus is great for messaging and emails. With such a slim body and light weight, the handset is a breeze to hold and type up messages. The buttons that make up the full QWERTY keyboard are a nice size, bigger than the buttons found on some Blackberry device, are more simple to use. The Pixi Plus of course is no speed demon, and should not be thought to be one. You can think of Palm substituting the speed for the multitasking function. Nothing to ride home about is the 2 megapixel camera. Yes it does take photos, but far from good quality. There is a flash to help in areas that have low light or no light at all. With an upgrade coming to webOS that is version 1.4 should bring video capture to the handset. It will be interesting to see what other functions can be implemented with upgrades.

The man highlight of the Pixi Plus has to be the added Wi-Fi, hot-spot feature, and multitasking support thanks to webOS. The phone excels for those users that want easy access to texting(a great attribute considering the growing popularity of texting) and emailing. The search query that is supplied by webOS is a great one, and will help find answer to looming questions users have that are either stored on your phone otherwise the search query feature will take it’s search to the web via Google, Yahoo, and various other search engines until you have your answer. The plus version was a much needed upgraded, so that the Pixi wasn’t just some over priced paper weight that the user would have a sub par mobile experience with. I hope Palm sees the improvements they added and what one consumers really take hold and like. Palm needs to continue down the path laid down by the Pixi Plus and Pre Plus and I can definitely tell they are taking notice of their successes. At least I hope so because if they intend on improving their market share they need to jump into the market with some equivalent devices to rival the Nexus One and iPhone to offer alternatives to the gigantic and projected to be shrinking RIM market. The Pixi Plus is simplistic and easy to use, has several great features, but isn’t quite an alternative to the aforementioned, merely a substitute for those trying to save some money which anyone can hardly blame them for.
