Motorola Droid X Review
- July 16, 2010
4.0

First there was the Droid. It captured all of our Android loving hearts. It had us mesmerized us with the screen and the keys. It was a little slow for our liking, but then it came. The Droid X. It is incredibly breath-taking. This baby is just climbing the charts amongst the summer’s hottest smartphones – Apple’s iPhone 4, Sprint’s HTC Evo 4G, & the whole US Samsung Galaxy S series. This charmer has a powerful 1 GHz processor, with a bright, colorful, glossy 4.3 inch touch LCD screen. Loaded with Google Android OS v2.1 and 8 GB of internal storage. One of the many aspects you will find enjoyable are the 8.0 MP camera with it’s HDMI video capabilities. The Motorola Droid X is a looker, and when we see it turning heads left and right. Well we are more than sure that this dreamboat could just climb to number one.

Pros: The Motorola Droid X has a powerful 1 GHz processor, with a bright, colorful, glossy 4.3 inch touch LCD screen. Loaded with Google Android OS v2.1 and 8 GB of internal storage. One of the many aspects you will find enjoyable are the 8.0 MP camera with it’s HDMI video capabilities.

Cons: You may find that the Droid X doesn’t have a front facing camera for video calling. The screen washes out in bright sunlight. I love the Droid X and using all the apps and texting all the time, but I can’t help but feel that the battery is letting me down.

When you think Motorola, what’s the first thing that pops in your head? Droid right? Well the people at Motorola has certainly made a name for themselves. And with the new arrival of Droid X to Verizon, Motorola just keeps getting better. This device is just the continuation of the impressive Droid series – the Droid being it’s predecessor. Droid X is just following in the rest of the smartphones to launch this summer; Apple iPhone 4, Sprint HTC EVO 4G, and the Samsung Galaxy S series. With the first generation Droid leaving it’s mark on the world to enjoy, this baby will continue to rock HTC’s world and kick them off the dominance of top Android phones. This high-end smartphone is sure to capture your Android-loving heart.

Upon opening the package, you see that it may not be like the iPhone’s all tasteful or as aristocratic as the EVO’s, but the Droid X’s box is exceptional. It of course, sports that red eye everyone knows so well. And we’d like to think that Verizon is going on a diet? This eco friendly box is just small enough to fit the phone, a micro-USB cable, and a charger. But then again it’s not like we need to look at the crappy headphones they have to offer us anyway. Well a very generous 16 GB microSD card is pre-installed with a 8GB installed in the internal. The baby is also equipped with a 1GHz processor and a powerful 1540 mAh battery. Droid X was designed for people who can handle this kinda of powerful.

When you usually hear about the Motorola Droid X, you often hear about the comparisons between the Droid X and the HTC Evo, well often what most people don’t know is that they are almost exactly the same. There are a few minor details, but I’ll explain them for you. Both have those crystal clear 4.3 inch screens of beauty. The difference? Droid X has slightly more pixels, about 54 to be exact. Droid x – 854×480, EVO – 800×480. EVO’s 4G Mobile can handle up to eight simultaneous users, Droid X’s 3G up to five. The EVO is a hair taller at 4.8 inches vs. Droid X’s 4 inches and a bit thicker (both are 2.6 inches wide) – although both are technically around a half inch thick (Droid .4, EVO .5 inches) – the Droid X measures that thick only at the top part of the phone housing the camera and is otherwise just around three-eighths of an inch thin. the EVO is a half once heavier, not that you will notice in your hands. Both are Android 2.1 phones (both upgradable to Android 2.2 when available), equipped with a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 1GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera, high-definition video recorder, HDMI jack, Wi-Fi, 8GB of built-in memory plus a high-capacity microSD card slot for a potential 40 GB of storage and a built-in mobile hotspot. And lastly, the Droid X has a more powerful battery then EVO’s 1500 mAh cell (Droid’s being 1540 mAh). Comparing these phones is just like trying to split hairs, there are the difference but they are both very impressive technical achievements when it comes to Android phones, or just phones in general.

Now, as we look at the display, we see that it’s just bewitching. Calling this phone beautiful would be an insult of this just pure radiance and luminescence. It’s much more usable out of the bright sun, where you will find a bright glare if you use in outdoors, but is much more of an inside kind of phone. At about 228dpi, pixel density is lower than the original Droid although 265dpi, but it’s still high enough that we can’t find those pixels that no matter how large and popped out our eyes get we just can’t see them. For me, I found that this touchscreen keyboard is just exactly how I like it. It’s quick and doesn’t require much learning at all if you’ve never had a touchscreen before. The Droid X is just the most superlative social networking phone I’ve seen in awhile. It has it all.

If you did see this baby you can tell that Motorola just wanted to make this phone as thin as possible. AT 9.9 millimeters, you it’s is doesn’t sacrifice anything. There still is a camera takes amongst the best phones we’ve seen so far. Much crisper and clearer then that of the iPhone 4 or the HTC EVO. Well this was when it was taken outdoors, but once we took our indoor shots, our conclusions often were cloudy and lacked focus. And While our images are impressive we saw that the HD video was a disappointment. It looked choppy, it is slow, and just too much to handle. The Droid X video clocked in around 24 frames per second, encoded at around 5 to 7 kbps second. The EVO video also was captured at around 5-7 kbps and 24 fps, but footage seemed smoother, and the iPhone 4 video out-smoothed them both, with nearly a full 30 fps at 10-plus kbps. When you go to scroll through the gallery, you find that this looks like what you may see for one of the Apple iPods when turned on it’s side. There are also many settings you may play with when editing this phone. The Droid X comes with three microphones; one at the bottom, one at the top, and one on the back. These microphones work together to block out and eliminate noises and buzz around you to give you a crystal clear voice. When we made our tests on the calls, we found that those microphones came in hand. We could everything the person had to say and they could hear us through the busy streets of Orlando. Speakerphone and Bluetooth headsets also met the high standards I expected them to be. When it came to web browser, we saw that it opened the full HTML page in about five seconds. Opening Cellphonetrek.com only took a few seconds as stated previously, and roaming through the website was just a breeze. Battery life was good. You get a eight hour rated talk time and only ten days of standby. When it comes to texting you get that speech texting ability everyone has been talking about. When you’re in the car you will notice that when plugged into the car docking station you will see six large selections just waiting waiting for you, making your life a whole lot easier for the person on-the-go. Verizon’s Motorola Droid X will sell for $199.99 with a two year contract. This all mighty Android powered phone just could be the phone for you. I do enjoy playing and messaging with this phone. Maybe you will too. I hope you find this delightful phone just as enjoyable as I have.
