After a strenuous dissection of the code. It's been deterimed that the Palm Pre’s identity to that of its host when connected via USB is is what we initially thought for a while now. The availability to sync with iTunes wasn’t really all that known by Apple when announced. A bit confused? After studying various code, programmers have confirmed that the Pre masks itself as an iPod for iTunes synchronization.
So get this, the Pre masks itself as an iPod when it’s in “Media Sync Mode”. Though, this is only to the OS’s mass storage interface; when booted up, the root USB node still identifies as the Palm Pre, which could end up being bad news for Palm. If Apple felt the need to, they could easily block it out. We’re not exactly sure how the folk in Cupertino feel about all of this, but we have to give it up to whatever hacker at Palm came through with this.
