Apple’s relentless assault against HTC could possibly have more a more vast reach than originally assumed. The patent lawsuit against HTC has several other Android manufacturers preparing for the worst via acquiring legal consultation, revising strategies for their OS pending the outcome of Apple’s lawsuit, returning hardware back to engineering, and altering development road-maps out of the public spotlight. Early in 2009 the Apple COO Tim Cook started the war by stating “we will not stand for having our IP ripped off and we’ll use whatever weapons we have at our disposal. I don’t know that I can be more clear than that.” While Apple took a more passive stance during the rest of the year, Palm launched the Pre and several other manufacturers dispatched a multitude of non-multi-touch smart-phones that were otherwise nonthreatening to Apple’s iphone market. However with Google, HTC, and Motorola making a fashionable entrance into the world of smart-phones with the Droid Eris, Nexus One, and Droid with glistening sleekness, practical functionality, and extensive multi-touch capability which did in fact threaten Apple and provoke the malice against HTC as their first victim in the upcoming legal battle and the other manufacturers concerned they may be next. In comes Microsoft to the rescue! With their comprehensive patent library and assuring smart-phone manufacturers refuge against Apple’s upcoming scornful rage with their Windows Phone7 Series. Microsoft just may come out on top in this face-off. I feel as if we’ve witnessed this conflict before with Apple and Microsoft, but then again no-one appreciates their monopoly being jeopardized. I think we would all be better off with some healthy competition for Apple as to continue leaps forward in the mobile industry. We’ll bring you more information on this Cell Phone News as it develops.

In regards to cell phone news it doesn’t seem like Palm is turning their ship around and heading down the right path. As more ugly news comes out of the Retailers that sell the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, that the prices on these devices will be slashed. It started looking bad when Verizon, one of the biggest wireless providers started offering buy one get one on both of the Palm products. With online retailers not making it any easier selling these handsets for sub $40, it seems like for people to want these Palm’s they will have to give them away. It seemed like Palm had its turn around plan in place and they were going to do the right things to start gaining market share and creating revenues, but are they? More after the JUMP!

Rogers may have lagged behind for a short while, but the Dream and Magic launch have helped put them ahead in the Android race. Their most recent addition to the team is the Samsung’s affordable yet sleek i5700 Galaxy Spica. The Galaxy isn’t revolutionary by any means with a modest 3.2 megapixel camera that doesn’t have a flash, but it’s certainly an alternative to some of the more expensive models such as the Magic. With an almost certain release of Androids 2.x software upgrade in the near future, a mere CAD $79.99 (around US $78) and a 3 year commitment don’t seem like too much to get your hands on the Galaxy Spica. There is also the CAD $399.99 (US $390) non-commitment route should you not want to be tied into a contract.

With the release of the iPad coming closer every day, this new piece of hardware is going to open up new business for a lot of different industries. As you may already know the iPad exclusive with At&t’s wireless network, however this won’t stop telecom giant Verizon Wireless to pursue a deal with Apple to open up the exlusitivity on the iPad, and bring it to a wider consumer base. With the release of MiFi from Verizon it makes sense for Verizon to try and get their hands on an iPad deal.
If you are not familiar with MiFi, basically what you do is push a button, and it instantly creates a hotspot for wireless devices. This would be great for a mobile media device such as the iPad, and would bring a fast, reliable internet connection to our wireless devices. The problem is iPad customers are going to get use to the At&t deals which are half the amount of the Verizon deals. More after the JUMP!

Leaks continue to pile up in cell phone news about Microsoft’s Pink phones running on to the Marketplace. The latest two models being the Pure and the Turtle, suggested to land at Verizon Wireless sometime around April 20th. These will be the first two devices available in the line-up, and they will be targeted at the 13-17 and 18-29 age demographics. These two devices are said to be “featurephones” instead of full fledged smartphones, with an ad campaign that is said to center around the “truly, madly, deeply” campaign that we have been finding on recent Twitter Updates. With so many advanced smartphones on the block for such low prices nowadays, can these phones even make the first step in popularity? What do you think?

Verizon has been doing trials with their LTE (4G) network in 2 different US test markets, and they have just recently posted their results. Peak Results read:
“Trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. The speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers’ current or promised 3G network speeds.”
Whereas Realistic Results records that:
“Verizon Wireless engineers report LTE average data rates of 5-12 Mbps on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world environments and will offer Verizon Wireless customers mobile browsing speeds comparable to customers’ current, typical online Internet experience.”
It’s obvious that most companies will talk up their new products in order for their customer base to gain confidence, but when a company announces that their tests have exceeded their expectations, it’s hard to not get a little excited. Unfortunately, if you live in Boston or Seattle, you currently can’t experience these high speeds, but Verizon will be bringing them to you by the end of 2010. Lets cross our fingers for leaked 4G capable phones!

Today in Cell Phone News, the NFL and Verizon Wireless have announced that they have set up a four year deal which will bring NFL Mobile Programming and the NFL RedZone Channel to Verizon Wireless phones. What we know so far is that specifics, such as the phone and pricing information, will be announced in August, but this new service will be ready for Verizon wireless on time for the NFL Draft Coverage on April 22-24. Service subscribers will be able to watch Sunday and Thursday night games live, and will have access to to live radio broadcasts of every regular season and playoff game from home and away teams. Although Verizon is the one who announced this, they do not mention any exclusivity, and the NFL Mobile website still only mentions The NFL Mobile App on Sprint. Verizon used the announcement to also mention their upcoming 4G network. With today’s announcement, Verizon Wireless also becomes the official wireless sponsor of the NFL.

Earlier this year, we saw a wireless induction charger at the CES iLounge Pavillion. Made by Case-Mate, the company has finally given the device a name, a price, and most importantly, a ship date. Entitled the “Hug” (Consisting of the Hug Case and the Hug Pad), the device’s Hug Case slips on to your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and will recharge your phone by simply laying your device on to the Hug Pad. The Case is unfortunately Bulky, and this device relies on the same technology that we’ve already seen for years now. Although the Pad is able to recharge any cell phone which utilizes the technology, this is probably useless to iPhone users. The question is: Is this device really worth the $99 asking price? What do you think about this news?

It seems that everyday we seem to be learning more and more about the mysterious Windows Phone 7 operating system. It’s not hard to figure out either, seeing as Microsoft is as large of a company as they are. During TechEd Middle East, Microsoft employee Eric Rudder spoke about cross platform applications between the phone, the computer, and most interestingly, the Xbox 360. The game can be played using a keyboard, the device’s accelerometer, or an Xbox 360 game pad. When the source appeared on the screen, we were quick to notice that %90 of the code in visual studio was shared code. That should really spark the interest of developers out there. All in all, this is some really interesting stuff. We’ve got to hand it to Microsoft though for really coming through in the past couple of months with some impressive advancements. Keep up the good work!
