Leaks continue to pile up in cell phone news about Microsoft’s Pink phones running on to the Marketplace. The latest two models being the Pure and the Turtle, suggested to land at Verizon Wireless sometime around April 20th. These will be the first two devices available in the line-up, and they will be targeted at the 13-17 and 18-29 age demographics. These two devices are said to be “featurephones” instead of full fledged smartphones, with an ad campaign that is said to center around the “truly, madly, deeply” campaign that we have been finding on recent Twitter Updates. With so many advanced smartphones on the block for such low prices nowadays, can these phones even make the first step in popularity? What do you think?

Verizon has been doing trials with their LTE (4G) network in 2 different US test markets, and they have just recently posted their results. Peak Results read:
“Trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. The speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers’ current or promised 3G network speeds.”
Whereas Realistic Results records that:
“Verizon Wireless engineers report LTE average data rates of 5-12 Mbps on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world environments and will offer Verizon Wireless customers mobile browsing speeds comparable to customers’ current, typical online Internet experience.”
It’s obvious that most companies will talk up their new products in order for their customer base to gain confidence, but when a company announces that their tests have exceeded their expectations, it’s hard to not get a little excited. Unfortunately, if you live in Boston or Seattle, you currently can’t experience these high speeds, but Verizon will be bringing them to you by the end of 2010. Lets cross our fingers for leaked 4G capable phones!

Today in Cell Phone News, the NFL and Verizon Wireless have announced that they have set up a four year deal which will bring NFL Mobile Programming and the NFL RedZone Channel to Verizon Wireless phones. What we know so far is that specifics, such as the phone and pricing information, will be announced in August, but this new service will be ready for Verizon wireless on time for the NFL Draft Coverage on April 22-24. Service subscribers will be able to watch Sunday and Thursday night games live, and will have access to to live radio broadcasts of every regular season and playoff game from home and away teams. Although Verizon is the one who announced this, they do not mention any exclusivity, and the NFL Mobile website still only mentions The NFL Mobile App on Sprint. Verizon used the announcement to also mention their upcoming 4G network. With today’s announcement, Verizon Wireless also becomes the official wireless sponsor of the NFL.

Earlier this year, we saw a wireless induction charger at the CES iLounge Pavillion. Made by Case-Mate, the company has finally given the device a name, a price, and most importantly, a ship date. Entitled the “Hug” (Consisting of the Hug Case and the Hug Pad), the device’s Hug Case slips on to your iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and will recharge your phone by simply laying your device on to the Hug Pad. The Case is unfortunately Bulky, and this device relies on the same technology that we’ve already seen for years now. Although the Pad is able to recharge any cell phone which utilizes the technology, this is probably useless to iPhone users. The question is: Is this device really worth the $99 asking price? What do you think about this news?

Logitech has come up with probably one of the coolest apps that have ever been presented to the general public. This new app turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a wireless mouse and keyboard, via Bluetooth, for any computer or laptop that can send and recieve a Bluetooth signal. The app is said to work very well, and be compatible with both PC and Mac. The App is available FREE from the iTunes store, but also requires the installation of a seperate ’server program’, and another drawback is that once the iPhone goes into standby mode, you must reconnect the device in order to keep using it. According to Logitech’s description of the App, the App is a Multitouch Trackpad that can be used as a 2 or 3 button Mouse, in a Landscape or Portrait mode, supporting 2 finger scrolling, and on screen text display while typing.

Good news for the beaten down Mobile Device Market, global cell phone sales rebounded in the 4th quarter. Global Handset shipments were up 10% to 324.4 million in the 4th quarter of 2009, compared to 293.8 Million in the same quarter of the previous year. This is the first quarter of growth that the industry has seen since the 3rd quarter of 2008. ABI Research said it saw mobile handset shipments in the 4th quarter of 2009 grow about 15% since the 3rd quarter of 2009. All of these sales have increased competition, driving sales price down 2%, equaling to an average of about $117.55, says ABI Research. Also observed in the 4th quarter of 2009, both Nokia and Samsung Electronics increased their market share in the industry, Nokia’s now being 37.7% of the market, and Samsung’s being 20.5%. Apple and LG Electronics also saw growth in the same quarter.

Today, we have seen the change in opinion by the general public as to what a Mobile Device should be able to do. AT&T, the Sole Network that provides service for the iPhone, has been reported to service dropped calls, spotty reception, and Network Hiccups. With the dawning of a new age, the age of the iPad, we’re now beginning to see Mobile Devices demanding more than their network can provide. The fact is, is that Wireless Providers have drastically underestimated the demand by consumers, and as this trend of increased expectancy by consumers continues to grow, we will only see the Networks become slower and slower, resulting in extremely slow downloads, and spotty service on an already overwhelmed system. Wireless Data usage has grown to an unprecedented 7,000 percent since 2006, and companies are struggling to come up with the technology needed to meet these demands. Jeff Bradley, Senior VP for AT&T devices, says that they are working hard on meeting consumer demand,” but is this really enough?

Laws have been springing into Legislation of Banning the use of Handheld devices such as Cell Phones for talking and texting while driving. All this has been done to improve driver safety and awareness on the roads today. A study that has been in progress shows otherwise: According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, laws banning the use of cell phones for talking and texting while driving do not seem to be lowering the number of crashes that incur. The laws have been effective in getting drivers to use hands-free devices, but studies show that using a hands-free device may not be any safer than speaking on the phone itself - warding that the issue is more about the Distracted Driver than it is the Device. The Transportation Department, not being happy with the study, says that it’s irresponsible to say that these laws do not improve upon Highway Safety.

Nokia, the largest producer of cellular phones, is said to be cutting their prices on their mobile phones. Several Sources report Nokia to be cutting prices by up to 10 percent. Nokia said that cutting prices is a normal part of it’s growing, ongoing business, and reports that it normally cuts prices across it’s portfolio several times a year. After the price cut, Nokia’s cheapest model of smartphone, the 5230, which normally retails at 170 euros in Finland, now retails for 120 euros. Nokia said that last week, revenue on Smart Phones jumped 26% this quarter from last quarter. The price cuts have effected companies such as Sony-Ericksson, which focus on mid-range feature phones which usually boast a good camera or mp3 player, but lack the computer-like operating system. These price cuts follow the return of growth in the industry after the recession in 2009, Nokia says that it expects the Cell Phone Market to grow 10% in 2010.

MediaTek, the world’s number 2 provider of Cell Phone Chips for smart phones and other phones, shipped out 350 million units in 2009. Earlier today, announced in Taipei, the company said it aims at shipping 28% more chips than it did last year, being driven by the uprising market in feature-rich cell phones such as the smart phones that we see today. Taiwan’s biggest chip designer, MediaTek said it would sell chips with fatter margins and software already installed, in order for companies such as Motorola to be able to cut back on production time. Before these annoucements, analysts predicted that Mediatek’s 2010 sales to boost by 14%, to $4.1 billion USD. This year, Mediatek says they’re projecting 450 million chips being shipped, up by 100 Million from 2009.

We all know that Google becoming a mainstream Cell Phone contender holds some promise, but what exactly are it’s intentions for the new HTC Nexus One? On release, this phone is made available to T-Mobile, albeit not the worst Cellular Company on the block, but definitely one with the smallest 3G footprint out of all the contenders. But fret not - the phone will soon be coming to Verizon, and new filings with the FCC have approved the phone for AT&T as well. The New Nexus one will work with WCDMA Bands I, II, and V, meaning AT&T will soon be using this phone as well as Verizon and T-Mobile.

Engadget has some watermarked photo’s of what they are alleging to be the much anticipated Apple Tablet, said to be unveiled at 1pm EST. Now the question is - are these photo’s REAL or are they just another FAKE? Well I can’t speak for all of CellPhoneTrek when I say this - but first of all, I don’t believe that the Apple Tablet is going to feature that big clunky Button at the bottom center like the iPhone has. Secondly - If you look at the Top of the Screen of the ‘Apple Tablet’, it says “No Service”, yet somehow the device is still streaming what appears to be a google map - something that requires a connection in order to view. Lastly - What is with all of the nuts and bolts holding the device down? I know Apple has put millions into this project, but why would everyone at the convention be so crazy about snatching up the first edition, the one and only Apple Tablet in existance, everyone knows that Apple always fixes their bugs during the first couple months…
