We here is an interesting bit of cell phone news from CES. Samsung has revealed its DTV technology here at CES and it is currently operating on the Samsung Moment, which is a phone for the Sprint network. DTV is an interesting piece of technology. What it does it there is an antenna that is sleek and stylish that works to pick up the digital signal that local TV stations put out in place of the analog they used to use. Then after receiving the signal the receiver board then turns the data into a visible picture to be displayed on the Moments 3.2 inch AMOLED screen for clear beautiful pictures.See Video Below for full story.

It’s the second day of CES and after walking around yesterday just getting a feel for the show I realized some thing. I am never going to see this whole show. Now CES every year is large and people say they will never have enough time to see the whole show. What it is that I am saying is that even just the parts of the show that I want to see their wont be enough time. The booths are beautiful. Samsung and Panasonic have some amazing flat screen displays and all the booths and just LVCC it self are very clean and tidy. Which if you and your friends were here would be surprised your self with just the mass number of people and presenters walking talking. It is really hard to get around. Were off on to day two to visit Samsung and Kim Titus to see some phones over there. Hopefully we will also be able to get the LG booth as well to get a demo of the LG Expo, the projector phone everyone is speaking about.

Regarding cell phone news, Reuters is reporting that a suit against At&t has been filed by the District of Columbia. The reason being is to recover unused balances on calling cards purchased from the telecom company. There has been estimates of somewhere between 5 and 20 percent of the minutes remaining on the cards or leftover credit that customers don’t use, usually remains with the carrier as a sort of bonus. The Attorney General for DC is seeking to have these minutes treated as unclaimed property. Being considered as such would mean that under district law after three years this so called unclaimed property, would have to be returned to the state. It will be interesting to see what decision is made, and how theses telecom companies conduct prepaid services in the future.

Over the holiday weekend that has just past us, New Yorkers wanting to purchase a new and shinny iPhone via AT&T’s website were startled to discover that they couldn’t. It seems that no amount of Christmas money was enough to get your self an iPhone via the AT&T website. However, if you could bare the cold winter air and walk to an authorized AT&T store that carried iPhones, there were plenty in stock. Now this bit of cell phone news has been over hyped to say “oh AT&T didn’t sell the iPhone for three days on their website because of network issues”. That’s ridiculous, and the reason it is outlandish to say is because, AT&T would only care about selling the phones and worry about the network capacity later.

Opera Software was second only to the ruling that the European Commission announced in dealing with the Microsoft bundling of IE with XP, Vista, 7. Now, not really cell phone news but Opera being a leader in mobile OS i felt it appropriateto give kuddos to the efforts of Opera. Back in December of 2007, Opera urged the EC to look into the almost monopolistic features that Microsoft features in its beginning set up. Now, though, after a two investigation Microsoft’s hand has been forced to have the popular Internet Explorer program to not be the only choice available when a user is to load up the computer for the first time.

RIM boasts Q3 09’ revenue of 3.92 billion dollars, that’s an increase of 11% from the second quarter of 2009. What is even more surprising is the cell phone news article I read is that RIM went up from the same quarter last year. The Q3 08’ 2.78 billion, that is a 41% increase. Another milestone for the quarter was RIM sold its 75 millionth Blackberry handset. Net income sits at 628.4 million dollars for the quarter as well. RIM had this to say about the recent earnings and expansion.

After the police had arrested Mr. Smith, the police search his phone noticed that Mr. Smith had been in contact with the PI previously. Cell phone news can’t get any bolder than this. Apple is countersuing the handset manufacture Nokia as the they claim that the largest mobile handset manufacturer in the world holding a market share of 37% is using 13 of Apple’s patents. The even more bold statement comes from Bruce Sewell, the General Counsel for Apple and the company’s senior vice president. Sewell is quoted as saying

Saks Fifth Avenue is not a name you hear in cell phone news often but today will be the day. The luxury, high end retailer of many things has picked out the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness to be the next phones that it sells out of its locations. And at the price per phone sitting at $990 US, Saks couldn’t have picked a better phone for their clientele. The phone is the leader in the newest line of phones by SE, with the hope of gathering some more clientele since the Walkman and Cyber Shot camera phone sales have fizzled as the products are becoming out dated and not as fresh to the cell phone scene. What is so revolutionary about the design of the new Xperia Pureness and the line its self is two fold. First is the pureness’ screen is revolutionary as it uses a 1.8 inch monochrome display that virtually disappears when not in use and the “Pureness Concierge” service.

Have you ever grabbed your cell phone bill and played that game where you wonder how high your cell phone bill is going to be, guess a number and open the bill to see how close you really are. That’s really important cell phone news work, why we have to play games with our cell phone bills. Well a local California man couldn’t have guessed anywhere high enough. Ted Estarija, sat down Saturday morning to open up his Verizon wireless bill and looked at the total cost, $22000 dollars. Immediately he called Verizon and asked why his bill was so high. Ted had just recently added his teenage son to the family plan and was expecting and increase.

Top cell phone news to report today to you all. The GAO, Government Accountability Office, said that the FCC doesn’t do enough to help consumers with their wireless carrier issues. The report by the GAO said that the FCC get thousands of complaints every year yet doesn’t follow through on harping on the carrier to make them change their business practices. The report covers many topics but the ones of greatest concern are the issues pertaining to billing statement set up, hidden fees, overages, and ETF (Early Termination Fees). Now, don’t beat down the FCC as they have made attempts into making the carriers more truthful with “truth in billing“ rules which in a nutshell say that carriers can’t charge or change the price of something with out letting you know first. What this report really is coming at is getting public opinion behind the FCC with their battle over ETF. It was reported that two weeks back when the FCC launch a compliant against Verizon for doubling their ETF due to the higher cost of smartphones they have been giving customers. Other complaints listed are as follows

Look at what a Motorola source code invasion gave us! A Motorola handset dubbed “La Jolla”, meaning Jewel in English, was found in the Motorola system. Along came a description and the set is expected to be a “low-end Android clamshell”. So, if you would, picture the Verizon Voyager powered by Android and that’s what you’ll want to expect as a result of Motorola’s new project. Furthermore, the handset is supposed to boast a WQVGA screen, 528 MHz processor and a QWERTY keyboard. I believe in this project’s potential and heavily expect this handset to be a hot topic one day. It perfectly aligns itself with a division of people that, in my opinion, haven’t had the financial opportunity to posses phones with Android platforms. So, it’ll be nice to see Android creeping to the less capable range of handsets. Let’s hope for more in the future.

Motorola is making a leap into the future. They have a subsidiary company called Motorola Ventures, which has thrown a load of money at a French company, Sensitive Object. They have created a technology that makes any surface into a multitouch interface. What this means is that you could take a glass table top and using this interface technology have a giant touchscreen. Or in the case of cell phones have a completely button-less face to any handset. The technology has been successfully tested on materials such as glass, metal, and even plastics. How the technology works is that it uses acoustic touch recognition to make sense of sensor data when a surface is touched.

Question: Should Nokia Buy Palm? I think not. Well the reason I pose this question is because Brain Blair of Wedge Partners says that in his opinion that Nokia needs to buy palm to stay competitive and relevant. As it stands right now, Nokia is the World leader in cell phone handset sales. They currently hold 35 percent of the market that means for every 100,000 handsets sold in the world, 35,000 purchased are Nokia. Now Brian, looking at his data has come to the conclusion that Nokia needs to buy Palm to stay in this position. He announced this in an open letter to Nokia’s Board of Directors. He also continues to say that Symbian and Maemo are “inferior, lacking the polish and smoothness offered by other OS’”.

Sony Ericsson just can not catch a break it seems. News from across the pond states that SE”s latest phone, the AINO, has encountered a software issue where some users can not access the phone touchscreen. This probably means that the UI is failing and the screen isn’t reacting to the touch. Now the issue has been examined by SE experts in the country and it has been confirmed that it is a software issue only. SE had this to say via Mattias Holm, Sony Ericsson spokesman:

Nokia news today from Reuters. Nokia and its number one chip manufacturer have come to an agreement about what types of chips must be needed for the next generation of mobile phones. There is a technology called 4G LTE, and what it means is Long Term Evolution. LTE is a gamble right now because there are two paths mobile networks are going to go. There is the LTE way and the there is WiMax, which is a technology that Sprint is already deploying. What does this mean for Nokia? Well they need to know what types for chips to buy being the largest handset manufacturer in the world.

Microsoft made a slip up in one of its beta sites dedicated to the Office Mobile 2010. Now Office Mobile is totally different then the highly rumored Win Mo 7. Slated to be part of Windows Mobile 7, Office Mobile is going to make mobile content management easier and simpler than ever. What’s really cool though is that looking at the photo and reading what its supposed to represent, it doesn’t add up so what’s Microsoft have here. Is it a skinned up version of WinMo 7 alpha from two years ago, or some type of misdirection? It will be interesting to see if Microsoft has waste all this time on something not so revolutionary.

Speculative article by TechCrunch states that Google might be trying to create a branded phone for Q1-Q3 2010 release. Now, as much as this article is fact versus speculation it is widely noted and speculated that Google wants a phone of their own, with no help from the outside. However, this statement can be debated as Google may already have a branded phone, the Dev Phone 1 and the Ion. Unfortunately, as these phones were highly developer-oriented one-offs and were not original in style due to the fact that they modified clones of other phones, it doesn’t meet the criteria of a truly Google branded phone

Turn the news on and breaking news says that one or many major carriers have been bogged down or even crashed because hackers have infiltrated hundreds of thousands of smartphones through app downloads. Fantasy right? Wrong, according to RIM’s VP of Blackberry Security, Scott Totzke. He says that the threat of DDOS or Distributed Denial of Service is increasing every day. Totzke is quoted as saying, “I think that’s an area of concern.” Research is currently underway at many different software manufactures that specialize in Mobile security. Flexilis is one of these companies that researches and fixes the problem associated with mobile hacking. Phones become infected when downloading illegal versions or tainted versions of popular apps. Best Buy accidentally leaked out some of the black Friday deals and boy are they great. the last item on the list is great for the Christmas time, Xbox 360 with 4 games for 300 dollars that’s not a deal that’s a steal! The long list below represents why Best Buy outlasted Circuit City and i cant wait to see the deal in person. As I looked down the list, especially at the cell phone area i was really disappointed by the lack of deals and selection available. I was really hoping to see at least on Android based phone. Now i will not place the blame on anyone yet as i do not know if this decision came from the manufactures the carriers, or Best Buy themselves.

Nokia back in October filed a suit against Apple. Why would Nokia and Apple be going to court you ask your self. Unfortunately, Nokia didn’t bother to check to see if Apple was infringing on any of its own patents when pertaining to GSM, UMTS and/or local area network (LAN) standards, thinking, I guess, that Apple wouldn’t be as brazen to use patented technology with out paying royalties or even asking permission

Sales of mobile handsets grew 0.1% in the 3rd quarter of 09, not a huge increase but when considering the massive and global financial crunch the world is in it’s a good sign. Even better than that is the near 13% increase that smartphone sales saw. These numbers are a comparison to last years 3rd quarter sales. The recent in crease in Smart phones is due vastly due to the number of new smartphones that had come out in the 3rd quarter and is expect to rise even more during the 4th.

The Verizon blog had an interesting addition today. The Word Idling, it means to let your car sit still, not in gear or traffic. Just to sit in your drive way or parking spot listening to that last few minutes of a song on the radio. Or maybe you are finishing that conversation with the boss on the phone and don’t want to leave the nice climate controlled car with the heat or A/C on full blast. Well folks I hate to tell you his but by all of us motorists doing that we are wasting millions of gallon of gasoline ever year along with degrade the quality of the air around us. The blog goes to show that since Verizon has stated this no more idling project it has saved more than 2 million gallons of gasoline.
