Microsoft Demos Multi-Platform Applications for Windows Phone 7

7 March, 2010, 10:07 am

It seems that everyday we seem to be learning more and more about the mysterious Windows Phone 7 operating system. It’s not hard to figure out either, seeing as Microsoft is as large of a company as they are. During TechEd Middle East, Microsoft employee Eric Rudder spoke about cross platform applications between the phone, the computer, and most interestingly, the Xbox 360. The game can be played using a keyboard, the device’s accelerometer, or an Xbox 360 game pad. When the source appeared on the screen, we were quick to notice that %90 of the code in visual studio was shared code. That should really spark the interest of developers out there. All in all, this is some really interesting stuff. We’ve got to hand it to Microsoft though for really coming through in the past couple of months with some impressive advancements. Keep up the good work!

HTC: the Nexus One Doesn’t Belong in your Pockets.

6 March, 2010, 11:21 am

The Nexus one is currently one of the most popular and powerful Android devices on the market today. That being said, it’s about time the flaws in the device start to arrise from the public. One of the good folks over at CNET had recently discovered a growing crack on the devices display. The Nexus [...]

Google to Run Heart-Warming Super Bowl Ad.

7 February, 2010, 5:26 pm

Google plays well with their “Don’t Be Evil” motto with a heart-warming ad that will be ran during tonight’s Super Bowl Game. The ad can be found on Google’s “Search Stories” YouTube page. The ad was originally uploaded in November according to the page. A source claims tomorrow night, an ad titled “Parisian Love” will air during the third quarter Sunday night. On Twitter, Google’s Eric Schmidt said he was very excited and couldn’t wait to see the commercial tomorrow. That and something about “hell freezing over”, so there’s another reason the folks at home might want to tune in. Either way, we’re excited! Video on the main page!

Symbian Releases Source Code to Public

7 February, 2010, 5:09 pm

Even though Nokia has recently adopted Maemo 5 as its new flagship OS, Symbian still plans to make headlines and stay aggressive by releasing the source code for download. As for the base code, SDKs, and PDKs, they will all be available with the Eclipse license. By making Symbian 3rd Edition free for download, developers and handset manufacturers will take interest into the open source platform. While Nokia is touting Maemo 5, the Finnish manufacturer has stated that it will not be dropping Symbian as an OS partner. Hopefully we can see an app store for the OS, because it seems that Symbian’s biggest problem at the moment seems to be software support. More info after the jump!

HTC Incredible Confirmed and in the Wild

7 February, 2010, 4:49 pm

The HTC Incredible hopes to set high standards with such a name, but we’re not sure if it lives up to the hype. This device was rumored to be in the making sometime last December, but today the device has officially been spotted in the wild. The device appears to be set on Verizon’s network bands. The good folks over at Pocketnow have seemed to capture a few details along with some leaked photos and video. The Incredible offers nothing too advanced, Android 2.1 accompanied by Sense UI, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 256MB of RAM, and Duel LED Flash with a camera. The device seems to tout a 3.5 inch screen, possibly AMOLED. Check out the link for shaky video!

80k of Nexus One’s sold in it’s first month

7 February, 2010, 4:22 pm

Today in cell phone news, a analyst firm call Flurry Inc, is reporting that Google sold around 80,000 of the smartphone Nexus One, a Android powered device, and the first attempt of Google to sell a product branded by them. There could be a few reason for this very low number for the first month, the first reason being how Google is selling the product. Instead of selling it directly through a weireless provider, They have actually made a web page www.google.com/phone to sell the product. Phones that were sold directly through a provider like the Motorola Droid, sold 525,000 units during its first month of sale. The iPhone sold more than 600,000 units during it’s debut. It will be interesting if this number will pick up, and if Google takes another approach to selling and marketing the Nexus One.

Motorola Droid supports multitouch in Google Maps

7 February, 2010, 2:48 pm

In cell phone news, not even a week after Google updates their smartphone the Nexus One with a multitouch update, they also release an updated version of Google Maps available for the Motorola Droid that supports some multitouch functions. The new version of Maps enables a pinch to zoom function, it was no secret that the Android OS 2.0 version had in place support for this kind of stuff, it was all just a matter of time. It will be interesting to see if other device will gain some multitouch support, or how far Google is willing to go with these updates to their OS. As of right now the new version for Google Maps, the 3.4, is now available via a software update in the Market right now. We will be watching this carefully and bring you more info as it come available.

More Windows Phone 7 Details Spill Out.

7 February, 2010, 11:41 am

A plethora of reports have recently flooded the internets that Microsoft will be unveiling the user interface of Windows Mobile 7 sometime during Mobile World Congress this month. Within the last 48 hours a new offset of rumors have hit the airwaves, going into detail what the launch will and will not contain. The trusty PPCGeek forum has been home to some “truly amazing information” concerning what will be called Windows Phone 7. Makes sense, Windows Phone plus Windows 7? The UI will contain an almost exact replica of a Zune HD’s interface (under the codename METRO). Some even go as far as to say the interface as “very clean,” “alive,” and “soulful.” More info after the jump!

Google Advances Nexus One Video Segments: Part Two

7 February, 2010, 10:52 am

This is the second installment of Google’s Nexus one video series. Google likes to keep their name in cell phone news, apparently. The first video focused on mostly the call and sound quality, and the overall design of the device. In Google’s latest segment, botch HTC project manager Tomasz Hasinki and Google Android software engineer Romain Guy go through the Nexus One’s capacitive OLED screen as well as the 3D framework. The videos are pretty short, but I’m sure this won’t be the last one. Check out the video up on the top main page!

AT&T adds functionality to FamilyMap Locator App.

6 February, 2010, 4:10 pm

There seems to be more reason for kids to have cell phones these days than some might want. Yesterday AT&T announced that its locating FamilyMap application for the iPhone has been upgraded with a handful of new features. The most notable of the changes would be the ability to locate a family member using your mobile device, where as previously a computer was required. Other features include POIs, device labeling, map panning, and landmarks. The service itself will run you at $10 per month for a pair of lines, and a family package of up to five lines for $15 a month.

Dell Mini 5 Goes Undercover for FCC

6 February, 2010, 4:00 pm

Currently there are a few Dell handsets roaming throughout international markets, more specifically China and Brazil. The Android powered device was manufactured by a company under the name of Qisda and has been on sale globally for some time now. It seems that the folks at Engdaget have confirmed that the same device has recently just passed through the FCC under Qisda’s name. If you look at the picture, you’ll see an official FCC filling for the Qisda M01M. If you notice also, there is a shot of the Mini 5 with practically the same name. FCC files the handset as a “mobile internet device” that will carry support for WiFi as well as full HSPA (AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and Telus) as well as edge. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a stateside release soon?

Sony Ericsson’s Aspen seen in Foreign Review Video.

6 February, 2010, 3:48 pm

The video found on the homepage of Sony Ericsson’s new Aspen device is spoken in a foreign language, but it doesn’t mean you mean you can’t ooooohhh and ahhhhhh at the device. We’ve got to say, the design on the device is really sleek and holds its own against a world full of Windows Mobile brandished Samsung, LG, and HTC devices. In the video you’ll also get to see some of Windows Mobile 6.5.3’s new menus and features as well. The video is up on the top page!

T-Mobile Q1 Handset Slide Leaked

6 February, 2010, 3:42 pm

While Cell Phone Trek cannot confirm the legitamacy of the slide seen above, considering T-Mobile’s current plan for the United States in 2010, it seems plausible. The slide pictured was released through the infamous PPCGeeks forum. The slide depicts seven new devices scheduled for a Q1 2010 release. What I first noticed out of all seven of the devices, was what appeared to be an Android device by the name of “CLIQ XT”. The slide also includes launch dates for each of the respective devices. The XT for instance, is scheduled for a release date of March 10th. The two most other eye-grabbing devices are the Nokia Nuron, which appears to be a economical touchscreen device with 3G access (most likely capactivite, frown face) and the mighty impressive HTC HD2. More after the jump!

Samsung S5620 Monte Caught in the Wild

1 February, 2010, 5:30 pm

This isn’t the first time hands have been laid on this device, but this will be the first time the general public has come face to face with it. Daily Mobile broke news with a few snaps they have taken which are claimed to be Samsung’s S5620 Monte. The Phone, which appears to be powered by the TouchWiz UI will feature a 3” Display, 3.5mm headphone jack, and HSDPA. Upon reading the FCC inquiries, we’ve learned that the device also comes equipped with WiFi, and lacks 850 and 1900MHz 3G support. No love for North America it seems, but maybe we’ll see a similar device in the future, possibly sometime during Mobile World Congress.

OS X 10.3 Ported to Nokia N900

1 February, 2010, 5:12 pm

It’s always fun trying to port an operating system to a device it shouldn’t really be running on, but hey, that’s never has stopped the most intrigued. A man thought today to make cell phone news, that man, Toni Nikkanen of Finland has recently become the first successful person to port Apple’s OS X 10.3 (Panther) to the Nokia N900. This is all achieved through a PowerPC emulator by the name of PearPC. If you’re into 90 minute boot sequence and snail-speed cursing, then hit the link for a how-to. Video up top!

Google Announces Press Event on January 5th.

30 December, 2009, 10:34 am

Google wants to capture some well-deserved attention of its own apparently. Branching off from a traditional CES press unveiling, Google has announced an event will be held on 5th of January in Mountain View, California. With the amount of chatter going on about the nexus one, it will most likely be the announcement of the said device. Though as it stands right now most of our Cell Phone Trek crew will be on our way to the wonderful state of Nevada. More info after the jump

Microsoft and CBS Demonstrate My Phone Service in Short Segment

28 December, 2009, 11:37 am

There’s nothing like waking up on Christmas to a CBS and Microsoft cell phone news segment. Early that morning CBS featured a feel good segment on Microsoft’s My Phone service, which is free by the way for all of you Windows Mobile users. The service allows for any phone that has been misplaced and or lost to be located using either GPS or tower triangulation. Host Natali DelConte slips her HTC Pure into the back of an unsuspecting cab and begins her hunt. Now this all sounds great — until the GPS signal dwindles or a battery dies, however this is not the case this Christmas morning! To demonstrate some of the other features the My Phone service offers, the phone was returned using a a distress message sent to the device “I’m lost, call Natali!” While this isn’t a miracle on elm street, in the tech world that’s about as close it gets.

XPERIA X10 to Both AT&T and T-Mobile?

9 December, 2009, 2:00 pm

The XPERIA X10 is one cell phone review I’d like to have under my belt. Well now it appears there might be two chances! Rumor has it that Sony Ericsson has it set in motion to release two different variants of the device onto the U.S. market. So far from what’s rumored, both devices come equipped with 3G support, one of them being on the 1700MHz band. The XPERIA X10 has a scheduled release early next year, hopefully between then we can find out. Most importantly will be the price equipped with a 2-year contract taken off the pretty tall $700 price tag.

Dell Formally Announces Handset Division

5 December, 2009, 12:15 pm

This is some breaking cell phone news! Dell is in this one for the long haul. The Mini 3i is not the only device computer company Dell plans on releasing in the future. Slated first with a Brazilian and Chinese, the Dell Mini 3i is Dell’s first cellular device. Dell announced that the company plans on branching out a new division labeled the Communications group. This group will focus on portable devices as well as mobile phones. The division will be lead by former exec, Ron Garriques. No other word on possible handset releases, but one thing is for sure, Dell wants in.

Nokia Shows Glimpse of Symbian in 2010

3 December, 2009, 8:36 am

Hold it now, Nokia won’t be ditching Symbian in favor of the new sexy Maemo operating system, but instead they’ll be revamping it for a more up to date look! Good looks, Nokia! Yesterday Nokia had its Capital Market Day, with a many of new goods to show off. The video, streaming straight from Nokia’s conceptual studios, seems to be displaying a capacitive touch screen. Nokia headed off the podcast by tackling the problems Symbian has faced in the past, claiming that the key to the OS’s success is in the UI. They go on to say the reason Symbian has not taken off is not the operating system itself, but once again, the UI—and we have to agree with Nokia on that one. More info after the jump!

Square Up Comapny Shows off iPhone Payment Dongle

2 December, 2009, 8:58 am

It’s hard to say that the iPhone isn’t revolutionizing technology in a variety of ways, from conceptual tricorders to the billion dollar app store, what’s become of the device is amazing really. This find is one of the cooler things I’ve tripped across recently—a payment dongle for your iPhone. Back in October, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey had launched a startup company under the name of Squirrel. Since then the company’s name has changed to Square, and has recently launched the website supporting the payment device. While the whole product is still in beta testing, the folks over at TechCrunch got to preview the device with Jack himself. A customer purchases a $4 cup of joe at a local San Francisco coffee shop. Sweet stuff, Mr. Dorsey. Video link after the jump!

Samsung Hosts Bada Event on December 8th

30 November, 2009, 10:49 am

So just how far will Samsung be pushing their new Bada OS, and will it indeed be replacing the Symbian platform — we’re not sure yet. If you’re still unfamiliar with Samsungs newly announced open mobile platform, make sure to tune in on December 8th to catch every last detail as they unveil it to the world live from London. The event starts at 11:30AM London time (bright and early 6:30AM EST / 3:30AM PST) unfortunately we won’t be live from the event but we’ll be there for the wrap up right after.

XPERIA X10 to go to AT&T?

23 November, 2009, 12:43 pm

I swear if you lurk on the internets for long enough you can trip across some really interesting stuff — even information about the most prized of all current Sony Ericsson projects, the XPERIA X10. While the device isn’t scheduled until quarter one of 2010 for a release, we are able to narrow it down to which carrier will be seeing the device. We’ll give you a hint too, it’ll be their first Android device—AT&T. We’re going to need to applaud the inquisitive investigators over at Phandroid. Upon browsing the specs, you can see that the UMTS frequency are available in 800/850/1900/2100 bands, which only fit within AT&T’s 3G network. Sorry to all you folks looking for something comparable to an Android iPhone device, but on another network. Of course, we’ve already heard numerous reports of the pre-order starting at a nice $1,000.

9100 Spotted in the Wild!

23 November, 2009, 11:24 am

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen any sort of release of the BlackBerry Pearl 8220, ever since the release of the flip-phone there was not tell to if we’d ever see a successor—or even what the successor would look like. Though a month or so ago, a glimmer of hope appeared on the internet when countless rumors claimed a 3G Pearl was on its way. A device code named Strike or Stratus has been recently caught in the wild. The device takes on more traditional roots with a similar design to the 9100. The device seems to be a GSM device, with an optical track pad, SureType keyboard, equipped with both WiFi as well as BlackBerry OS 5.0. Hopefully we’ll see some more updates on this device on this soon!

Samsung Shows off new Stylista-Inspired Devices

21 November, 2009, 1:50 pm

Samsung has been touting two new handsets recently. The most notable device as of recent has been the S7070, an iPhone inspired touch screen device. There’s not much we know about the device as of right now, with the exception of its 3” WQVGA resistive touchscreen display. As well as a microSD slot. You can note the diamond shaped button in the middle. The other device is the S5150 codenamed Olivia. The S5150 is based upon a clamshell design with a mirrored body (this hasn’t been the best idea i.e. the back of iPod’s). We currently know the device includes a 3.0 megapixel camera. These ladies are expected to drop sometime early 2010, most likely in Q1.

Motorola Crush Makes its way to

21 November, 2009, 12:53 pm

Motorola seems to be on the upside of things lately. While in the past year the telecommunications company based out of Schaumburg, Illinois announced numerous lay-offs, with the steady release of two popular android devices as well as numerous more to follow—it seems a new page has been turned. In Motorola’s latest attempt to regain mobile dominance is the Motorola Crush. The touch screen devices starts at $79.95, after the $50 rebate as well as a 2- year contract. The crush appeals to basic phone users as a sleek device. The device features a 2.8” most-likely resistive 240×400 WQVGA touchscreen, a seemingly outdated 2 megapixel camera, bluetooth 2.0, a nice 3.5mm headset jack, up to support for 16GB of sweet microSD support. While this isn’t the hottest handset on the market, it appeals to a seemingly simple crowd.

Amazon Offers Palm Pixi for $25

18 November, 2009, 1:51 pm

Palm is really in the line of fire today, aren’t they? It seems that any questions regarding the Palm Pre’s eligibility as a free device have been answered. Now that the question is out of the way, it becomes more of a focus on when it will be happening. The Palm Pre has recently been emerging on sale for low prices such as $50 through various retailers, but the device hit a new low today—$25 on Amazon, beating Walmarts discount by a whole $5. If you’re up for a renewal or want to sign a 2 year agreement the Pre can be yours for the super cheaps!

Rumors Swirl Around Nokia’s Possible Acquisition of Palm

18 November, 2009, 1:32 pm

This rumor has plagued the internets for some time now. Though all recent chatter has since died down due to the release of both the Palm Pre as well as the Palm Pixi — it seems that some rumors never die. Word has it that the big boys on Wall Street are going nuts regarding Nokia’s interest in liquidating Palm. So much hype was created over the rumor that Palm’s share went up a good 5% for the day. While the purchase would make no logical sense, it feels as if there could be a bigger hand at work. Plus you have to consider they already have two mobile platforms on deck. Another sub-rumor to this would be the option for Palm to license WebOS to Nokia instead of acquisition.

Nokia to Ditch S60 for Maemo 5

18 November, 2009, 9:19 am

If you haven’t heard about Nokia’s new mobile platform Maemo 5, then you may a bit out of the loop. With Nokia’s first release of Maemo 5 on its way to customers worldwide, a lot of questions are being raised as to what will happen with Nokia’s relationship with Symbian. Currently in Nokia supports both Maemo 5 and S60 5th Edition, but will one be phased out? Leave it to the members of Maemo’s marketing team to tell us all about it. The Really Mobile Project reports that Nokia will be purging S60 from any N-Series handsets for the fresher and much cleaner Maemo platform. This decision was made due to the overall welcoming reception of the N900 as well as the new OS. While the N900 is not currently in stores, the device have already begun to ship says CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. More info after the jump!

O2 Begins to Unlock iPhones as Exclusivity ends

18 November, 2009, 9:00 am

2010 is around the corner and carriers will soon be losing their exclusivity deal with Apple’s iPhone. O2 announced last week that they will begin to unlock iPhones as their deal comes to an end. Immediately customers signed up hoping to be the first to unlock their iPhone. It took a little while, but five days after the announcement was made users started to report in that their device had been unlocked. With the internets buzzing, many hoped would their emancipation would soon emerge. Well today just might be that day—for us it was. All that needs to be done is replace your O2 SIM card with a card from a different carrier, connect to iTunes, and you’re done!

Study Shows Half of Teens use Cellphones While Driving.

17 November, 2009, 4:21 pm

University of Michigan released an interesting study today that reveals at least half of teenagers between the age of 16 and 17 have used their cellphones while driving. That half used their device to talk on the phone, while a third of them have said to been texting while driving. Both males and females are equally likely to text while driving as well. The study was conducted from 800 teens between the age of 12 to 17 last summer by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project. Currently, many states are outlawing the use of cellular devices while driving hoping to push the use of handsfree devices such as bluetooths headsets.

Google Earth 2.0 Upgrade for iPhone

17 November, 2009, 4:13 pm

Today Google upgraded the famous Earth 2.0 app for both the iPhone and iPod touch devices. In this update you’ll find several new features, most notably a new feature that allows syncing between your desktop computer as well as your iPod or iPhone. Other features include user interface improvements and new languages. The biggest feature to be added to the Earth app is the custom map creation feature. Some other things: when touching an icon a small glow will emit from the icon, and 31 total languages are available. You can upgrade the Earth app from the App store!

Windows Office 2010 Mobile Exclusive for 6.5 Devices

17 November, 2009, 4:00 pm

We’re still suck using Office 2007, but we’re hoping to see the 2010 version soon enough; more excitingly though, we anticipate the release of Office Mobile 2010 as well. The highly sought after mobile rendition will allow simple sharing of documents between pc’s and mobile devices. After reading through the FAQ for the beta version currently available, the application will not be supported on Android or WebOS devices. It seems that Apple’s behemoth device, the iPhone, is too much of a cash cow to just ignore. Documents that are published through SharePoint Server 2010 will be accessible with the iPhone, BlackBerrys, and Symbian devices (we assume Maemo as well?) We’ll just have to see if this changes when an official release is available.

Nokia 5330 Revises Itself to Evolve into The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV

17 November, 2009, 3:59 pm

Nokia razzles and dazzles with an internal remix of the Nokia 5330, as no aesthetic change will snatch your attention. But, seeing as its unusual to see such an update take place, we’ll take you through the advantage of the new, Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition. Declared in the title, the enhancement lies in the phone’s freshly conceived ability to support DVB-H mobile TV tuning. Unfortunately, for us waving the red, white, and blue, DVB-H prevents the handset’s area of usefulness to breach US borders. Regardless, let’s skim the surface of the features that will install envy in Nokia loving, United States residents. The phone packs a 3.2 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 2.4-inch display, which will be the medium of streaming for the mobile TV– All of this for about $230. Meh.

Bing Creeps on to 10% Market Share

17 November, 2009, 3:37 pm

Search engines in the last 15 years went from somewhat relevant to totally dominating the internet, and maybe soon computers themselves. This theory becomes more and more interesting as the internet progresses further with playable media and even in-browser applications. I know we’ve all heard the ads Microsoft has been pushing for their re-branded search engine labeled ‘Bing’. It seems as if all that hard work is finally starting to pay off, the search engine has crept up to 10$ of the market. The share of the company on the internet has gone up 1.4% for the year so far and 0.5% just in September alone. While the first look of numbers may be deceiving, you have to consider that Yahoo! Is down 3% on the year and Google is only up 2.4 (what else did you expect though?) Not too bad Bing, we’re pretty impressed.

Sprint Hero on Sale for $100 via Best Buy

17 November, 2009, 8:41 am

Not sure which Android device to pick up this holiday Season? You’re torn between the $100 HTC DROID Eris for Verizon or the $172 Sprint HTC Hero? As much as we love to make the decision making easier, it just got a little harder. As part of a holiday promotion, Best Buy will be selling the Sprint Hero for the same price as the Eris — $100. Also for the same price is the Samsung Moment, but you cannot forget that with each new phone you must either be willing to sign a new contract, or be up for renewal. This deal only lasts until the end of December. Though with the amount of Android devices hitting the market, I’m sure another discount will be offered by then.

BGR Leaks Apple’s Black Friday Deal.

17 November, 2009, 8:34 am

BGR has got their hands on some inside information regarding Apple’s very own Black Friday deals. The image detailed above shows what Apple will be offering this year. While the discount has not been released by Apple themselves, it’s been said that this info will be emailed to customers shortly. Apple seems to have buffed up their discounts offering up to %30 on iPods, %25 off Macs, and %15 off accessories, software, and hardware. This deal only lasts one day, the 27th. Unfortunately these discounts do not apply to iPod shuffles or iPhones. Note that at the bottom, some stores will open at 6AM. Cool deal.

T-Mobile Quietly Brings the Sidekick Back

17 November, 2009, 8:24 am

After what was a huge error on T-Mobile as well as Microsoft’s part, Sidekicks were immediately taken off the market. You can’t find them anywhere. Now T-Mobile is peaking around the corner to see if it’s safe to bring them out on the market again. After all, T-Mobile took a pretty large hit considering all the discounts given. Due to the plethora of smart phones hitting the market every week, Sidekicks have been lowered in price. The 2008 has plummeted to a nice $49.99 with a contract. The LX 2009 is now $25 cheaper which brings the price to $149.99 with a contract. So if you’re into possibly losing your contacts, then jump right in. We’re kidding, the chances of data loss again are slim to none—we hope.

Reports come in Claiming BlackBerry Internet Service Outtages

17 November, 2009, 8:15 am

There have been a surge of incoming reports that internet services for BlackBerry are running through some complications tonight and are currently down. First reports claimed outages throughout North America, but now it seems they’re out everywhere else in the world. Though the ones here at Cell Phone Trek seem to be working efficiently, a little slow, but still manageable. Is your BlackBerry working right now? Let us know!

Microsoft offers Marketplace for 6.0 / 6.1 Devices!

16 November, 2009, 5:29 pm

Windows Mobile has been out and available for some time now. Now that Microsoft has all the kids playing with their Imagio and Pure handsets, time for them to focus on upgrading the less fortunate devices, as well as helping out the crippled versions of Windows 6.0 and 6.1. Microsoft swears that the version of Marketplace will be the same for 6.1 as 6.5. After a quick browse, we can say that there weren’t any differences. Currently only few phones are available for 6.5 upgrade. If you’re not one of the lucky few, hopefully an update is on the way.

iPhone ‘Home’ Button Earrings for Only the Nerdiest.

16 November, 2009, 5:14 pm

I’ve seen all sorts of fanboyism during my day, but this one takes a new route— fangirlism? Gadgets have been on the tip of the latest trends, so it’s not really all that shocking that we might see such jewelry crafted. By the looks of things, it seems that the earrings themselves are made out of the actual iPhone ‘home’ buttons, which leads me to ask—where are all these buttons coming from? I mean I’ve had a few broken iPhones in my day, but still. Peep the link below if you’re think you’re down enough to rock a pair. Not too shabby of a price, $14.95 plus shipping.

LG Shine II / BlackBerry 8520 Picked up by AT&T

16 November, 2009, 4:57 pm

AT&T has been missing out on the Android handset goodness that almost every other carrier seems to have joined in on, however they are still gearing up for this year’s holiday season. It was announced today that AT&T will be carrying both the always-nice BlackBerry 8520, as well as the new LG Shine II. Both of these phones are being added to what is being called the “best in the world smartphone lineup.” The Shine II packs nothing suprising and the Curve specs remain the same. Though if you’re interested in the specs as well as release dates, hit the jump!

XPERIA X10 hands-on video curteousy of hdblog.it

The XPERIA X10 will be Sony Ericsson’s first Android –based device, and for that reason, how well it succeeds or fails will leave big implications as far as the company’s future. That being said, the XPERIA X10 in my mind is the biggest stand-out Android device to date — yes, even bigger than the DROID. The folks over at hdblog.it got their hands on what seems to be another pre-production of the device. The device looks astonishingly fast since the last time we saw it in the wild. Now all we need is a shipping date and we should be golden. Check the link to the video after the jump!

Samsung Adds Galaxy Spica i5700 to Android Family.

16 November, 2009, 9:32 am

It looks like Samsung will be adding another member to the manufacturer’s current Android family. The new device is the little brother to the Galaxy, and will be called by the trade name “Galaxy Spica”. The i5700 as its otherwise called hopes to catch the attention of customers with its 13.2mm width, 800MHz core processor — which is probably the same processor as the Moment’s, and built in DivX support. The phone also comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera, which is always nice! Other than that, this device seems to be pretty basic with little to no skins, but most hardcore Android enthusiasts appreciate that. The device is already out in Europe and will be due out for the rest of the world a bit later.

Nokia E72 Available in Stores!

16 November, 2009, 8:57 am

According to Nokia, the E72 is in stores—somewhere. Where? Not even Amazon’s pre-order site or Nokia’s online store knows, but it’s out there. The device will cost €350 just as it was announced. The E72 is a strong upgrade from its predecessor the E71. The E72 sports a 5 megapixel camera, microSD slot (a nifty 4GB card comes with the device) GPS as well as integrated compass, 3.5-mm jack, and an optical navigation pad. While you won’t see the much hyped Maemo on here, the E72 still runs S60. Still, Nokia has updated the latest version of Ovi Maps as well as Nokia messaging. Hopefully we can get our hands on one to unbox soon!

NASA creates first Tricorder, is iPhone.

13 November, 2009, 11:29 am

The thought of using your cell phone as a tricorder is something each of us at cell phone trek hope to see in our lifetime. It seems NASA plans on making our dreams into a reality, how sweet of them. NASA has created a little device that monitors trace particles of chemicals throughout the air. The device was developed by Jing Li and a team of researchers at the Ames Research Center. Here’s the cool part; the device plugs into the bottom of the iPhone and utilizes a total of 16 nanosensors for detection. It can detect concentration of gasses such as chlorine, methane, and ammonia. As to why this was created, and what it’s used for, we’re not exactly sure.

Washington Post says Chrome OS to Launch in Less Than a Week.

13 November, 2009, 11:01 am

This is coming south of nowhere. A hand at the Washington Post has a reliable source claiming that Google’s lightweight and much anticipated Chrome OS will be launching within the next 7 days. The article seems mostly based off speculation with little or no facts, and with no announcement or recent mention of the OS it seems highly unlikely, but we’re going to run with it. A cloud-based OS sounds really nice for anyone looking to purchase a netbook in the near future.

Chinese Blogger Unboxes Dell Mini 3i

13 November, 2009, 10:35 am

I guess the quote “in the coming days” turned into today, huh? A lucky Chinese blogger was fortunate enough to get a Dell Mini 3i just before the official announcement was made. While there has been no official spec sheet, we can see that the screen is rightfully capacitive (good call Dell) and comes with a special stylist. In the unboxing we also notice there is no 3.5mm jack, but an adapter included for the mini-USB port – a common mistake made in a manufacturer’s first phone. When are the manufacturers going to learn, huh? Check out the unboxing after the break!
