When it comes to market share for smartphones and their use of the web everyone is looking to gain customers and usage so that their Operating Systems become more popular. A research company reported that the web share for both Android and RIM both gained market share while the iPhone OS lost some ground.
It make sense for the Android OS to be gaining ground considering all the new phones hitting the market, and will a growing number of manufactures now considering running the OS on their devices. Android came in at 15.2% of the market for web cell phone use up from 8.2% in January. It seems like this will be a continuing trend for the OS created by Google. This year should post great numbers and gains in market share for Android.
RIM the maker of the BlackBerry is growing market share at a slower rate than Android however. I am thinking this is because of two reasons. The first BlackBerries are older and have been around longer, so people who want a RIM device have one already. The second is because most BlackBerry users are business individuals, and they would spent less personal time on their devices consuming the internet because of that reason. RIM could own the entire business sector for smartphones, so in my opinion it will be hard for them to continue to grow without new sleek devices in the pipeline.
This report shows the iPhone lost some ground, that totaled 3.2 percent. With rumors surronding the new iPhone being released with a cheaper price tag, if the actually happens new users could swarm to the Apple smartphone and again grow market share for the largest web consumption phone on the market. The competition should try everything in their power to grasp as much market share as possible before the newer, cheaper version of the iPhone is ready for the masses.
All and all with more smartphones on the market the cell phone use on the web should continue to rise. The question is what OS is going to lead the way and be the most popular OS in the game. [Via
