Apple iPhone Review - June 30, 2009 ![]()
Pros: The Apple iPhone sets itself apart from other smartphones with its stunning display, sleek design, beautiful interface, awesome integration on phone and with PC that offers web browsing, email, and web application support. It really is a near-revolutionary device. Cons: The iPhone lacks basic features found on most cellphones Bluetooth support and 3G compatibility. It also has variable call quality and its battery drains out easily. It is because the device itself is a battery hog - it makes use of battery-draining technologies like WiFi and Bluetooth pretty heavily. One more thing, its headphone jack is annoying. The jack is recessed deeply into the device, meaning the jack that you use for your iPod will not work with this device without an adapter. It’s pretty expensive too. I am one of the many people who lined up from morning till the late afternoon just to get a hold of this device when it was launched 3 days ago, and oh boy it is all worth it! Kudos to Steve Jobs as the Apple iPhone really pushed the cell phone technology space forward by leaps and bounds. Love at first sight as per se, the Apple iPhone looks awesome with a vivid high-resolution display (which frequently leaves me speechless). Apple is now generations ahead of anyone of mobile phone tech with the release of this device. Prior to its launch, I thought tht this device won’t fit my pocket. It is a good thing that the Apple iPhone is pocket friendly. It works perfectly like my iPod too, and is packed with cool touch and phone functions. When I am listening to my fave music and suddenly a call comes in, the audio will fade out while the iPhone ringer fades in – all you’ve got to do now, is click on the mic that is attached to its headphones to answer the call. Cool huh? I also like its multi touch interface. When I am browsing the web, I can easily zoom in on items by tapping its screen, pulling in opposite directions using my two finger. This feature is perfectly executed! Aside from the first major consumer application of multi touch, the Apple iPhone also allows you to SMS your friends in the form of an instant messaging session, which is easy to use as you can keep track of what’s being said. I also like its auto screen orientation, wherein it auto switches from portrait to landscape when you rotate the device.I also noticed this another cool feature – when you’re on a call and it’s up to your head the Apple iPhone’s screen shuts off, and when you take it away or done with the call, the screen lights up again. It also supports three-way calls, and you can use the feature in just a matter of clicks – for me this is the simplest three-way calling feature compared to other phones that offer the same feature. The Apple iPhone works like a computer or a laptop. It allows you to sync with your calendar, address book, mp3s and videos with a touch – its onscreen keyboard is awesome it took me a few hours of practice to achieve proficiency. Now let’s talk about the Apple iPhone’s shortcomings. Though the iPhone is a stellar device, it still fails on some aspects. Firstly, its battery life. This should be improved as it is a battery hog and its battery drains out very easily. Is it because of its Bluetooth and WiFi? Not sure of that yet, maybe I’ll try disabling these features to see if this is the culprit. Its internet connectivity is also annoying. It is obviously slow since it makes use of AT&T’s Edge Network. It is slower than other data networks (if a WiFi network is available, device defaults to the faster option. The Edge Network is used only when there is no available WiFi). I have heard that AT&T boosted the speed of EDGE, but then again it is still slow compared to the much faster 3G network. After few days of usage, I have found a few other flaws with the iPhone. I don’t know if its just me or not but I have experienced crashes on apps especially the Safari Browser. I do hope that this gets fixed in their next software update.Oh, by the way – I almost forgot. I hate the iPhone’s headphone jack. It is inaccessible to conventional headphones. Your iPod’s headphones will not work with this device unless you have an adapter. Like most first-generation Apple products, itss price is high enough to put it out of reach for some consumers. But for me, it’s worth every penny since it’s a historic device and getting it on its launch date is priceless for me. The Apple iPhone really is an amazing product. The Apple Company really deserves a standing ovation from its fans and consumers. It’s drool-worthy design its best selling factor. And I must say that I agree with Apple CEO Steve Jobs when he said, "It's the best iPod we've ever built." Well, I can say now that the phone lives up to the hype. Though its network speeds are sluggish at times, it’s OK since it's EDGE andnot 3G – and hearing reviews or complaints about its slowness really makes me sick because were made well aware when apple announced it was Edge network. At least it’s fast via WiFi! Let’s talk about the pricing. For me, the price OK, since I have been an Apple fan for quite sometime now and for $499 for the 4GB version and $599 for the 8GB version it really is worth it. Overall it is a fun phone! It works OK, it played music reliably and I am in love with its large screen and it is a joy to have. I am looking forward to the the iPhone II! By the way! I almost forgot, having an iPhone will make your friends so jealous of you!!![]() ![]()
