Apple iPhone 3GS Review - June 28, 2009 ![]()
Pros: The iPhone 3GS feels lighter, and thinner than Apple iPhone 3G. It is powered by a faster processor and comes with a higher memory that offers great online and multimedia experience. It also features multimedia messaging, video recording, and voice dialing. Nice hardware additions like a better camera, magnetometer and fingerprint-resistant screen. According to many, the battery life is longer and it has improved on multimedia quality. Cons: The iPhone 3GS is still expensive and though it’s much faster many are still thinking twice to upgrade from Apple iPhone 3G. Call quality seems ok but there’s really no noticeable improvements and its 3G signal remains uneven. Another thing, there’s still no Flash Lite, USB transfer and storage, or multitasking. What's the point in buying the new iPhone 3Gs if it looks like its predecessor? Well the answer is simply its speed and it will definitely amaze you! Apple called this the iPhone 3GS simply for Speed, and I guess is more than enough as a reason for you to upgrade to a 3GS from a 3G or buy it as a virgin iPhone user! Personally I go for phone’s features, and not its specifications, and honestly it doesn’t blow me out in the features department. Instead, it's like purchasing a larger Television set or a faster car.
Like I said, the iPhone 3GS looks exactly the same as the iPhone 3G. Probably the only difference is that it is slightly heavier and it has glossy text on the back. The Apple iPhone 3GS’ screen is slightly more reflective too, thanks to the the new fingerprint resistant oleophobic coating. I must say that the iPhone 3GS is one of the best touchscreen phones out there. And if you are looking for a refined version, the the iPhone 3GS is your best bet -It's quite a bit faster than the 3G! In this Apple iPhone 3GS review, you will be to know its main features, and and how is it different from other iPhone versions. Let’s start with the 3GS’ physical design. Like the previous versions, the 3GS feels good in the hand, but it is a but heavier in the pocket. It features an oleophobic surface, making it less prone to fingerprints and easier to clean. You can easily spot an iPhone 3GS since it has a reflective material used on the text in the back. Unlike most phones nowadays, the 3GS works well in direct sunlight. Apple also fixed most of the user-interface issues, including the contact search and Exchange support. The existing phone functionalities work very well. There’s also visual voicemail (if your carrier supports this feature), which is cool when compared to the voicemails. Setting the iPhone 3GS is still as easy as 1,2,3. Menus are easy to find, because it’s user-friendly.Even if you’re new to iPhones, you don’t need to read its manual to be able to use it. Since the iPhone mostly relies on virtual controls, and I must say it has improved also. Based on my tests, the 3GS touch controls are far better than the Samsung devices as well as the myTouch 3G. When browsing the web you can easily go to .com sites because there’s a “.com” button. The window display size is better, there’s a pinch & zoom option and it comes with JavaScript support. It offers a good online experience. The loading of web pages can vary a lot, and, I think that the iPhone 3GS provides the best mobile web experience of all the cell phones that I have used. Next would be the Palm Pre. By the way, the 3GS is powered by a faster processor and uses (3.5G) wireless protocol, and that’s why it is 2x faster compared to the 3G version when it comes to web browsing. However, flash is still not supported, so Hulu videos are still out of reach. Now let’s talk about data speed and connection quality. With 3GS, the data speed is fast … when you actually do have 3G coverage. It also offers a better email experience, thanks to OS 2.0 because you can add as many accounts you want. It also supports Microsoft exchange. So far, I have tested Exchange, GMail and Yahoo and they all worked perfectly. Security wise, the 3GS is ok for consumer use. There’s the remove password and the remote wipe feature that you can use to clear away your data. The 3GS has a new and better camera that can take great photos. To take photos, you just have to use your finger to choose the point of focus, however I still prefer phones that have a physical shutter button simply because tapping on the screen to take a photo most of the time induces a shake which makes my photos look blurry. Now, you can record your videos with 3GS and the video quality is “OK”. Overall, the 3GS is a performer – it is quicj and responsive. Loading apps has never been a problem to me. It’s much faster when compared to iPhone 3G. I guess it’s because of the 3GS’ memory and the extra CPU clock speed. Regarding the battery life, I really can’t tell as of now if it has improved really or not since I haven’t used the 3GS that much and has not monitored its battery consumption. Anyway, I’ll just update you on this probably next week or so. About other aspects, the 3GS boots faster – it’s around 20 seconds, which is almost like a Netbook booting with instant-boot OS.Finally, the Copy/paste feature is now available and it works fairly well. Reagrding native applications, there are lots of new apps really and this review is not enough to discuss all of them. There are mapping apps available like the Google Maps, Compass, and messaging apps for IM like Skype. Now let’s talk about the things that Apple could have done better with the 3GS. First and foremost, its data plan pricing. How I wish that they have a lower price for the data plan. There’s also no UMA Support, and I am quite disappointed that Apple didn’t use an OLED display on this model. The Apple iPhone 3GS also doesn’t come with Flash Lite, USB transfer and storage options, as well as multitasking.Today, I can say that the Apple iPhone 3GS is the best of touch screen phone out in the market. Why? Simply because the 3Gs comes with solid hardware along with the best applications. However, it’s still expensive – for the cheapest plan (2 year contract) it will cost you around $2,000. Better yet get the sim free unit. Lucky you if you don’t have an iPhone yet, since you won’t find it hard as to whether to upgrade or not, you can just go on and buy the 3GS right out! Just a reminder, if you’re a heavy texter, the Apple iPhone 3GS is not the best option! The Apple iPhone 3GS may not be a huge upgrade for the iPhone 3G, but at least it the iPhone 3GS is way faster and you’ll surely like its new features and extended battery life. But then again, Apple should focus on improving the next iPhone’s call quality and 3G reception. I am definitely looking forward to that on their next release – Apple iPhone 4 perhaps?![]() ![]()
