Apple iPhone 3G Review - July 28, 2008 ![]()
Pros: The Apple iPhone 3G offers critical new features including support for high-speed 3G. Since the Apple iPhone 3G is now 3G compliant, expect better call quality and a faster data connection. It also supports third-party applications and expanded e-mail. Its headphone jack is now flush, meaning any standard headphones will now work in the iPhone without a need to use an adapter. It also comes with character recognition support for logographic-based languages including Traditional Chinese. It also comes with a SIM-card feature – this is really great for international use.
Cons: The Apple iPhone 3G still lacks some basic features that can even found other cheaper cell phones. Yes, the battery life is better than the original but it is now uneven. The 3G connection seems to be shaky according to some, and also, the e-mail synchronization is not without its faults. No copy paste function still, there’s no easily replaceable battery, A2DP, Push Gmail, a free way to sync data directly to a machine, open a new tab option in Safari, and lots of ActiveSync / Exchange features. Purchasing a new cell phone for me is really more than a matter of choosing a handset. Why? Simply because you also have to choose a carrier and each carrier in the US offers a different kinds of technologies & services, so it's critical to think about your needs before deciding on buying a new device. In this Apple iPhone 3 G review, you will be provided with all the necessary information for you to make a sound decision as to whether you will buy it or not. When the original Apple iPhone was introduced way back in 2007, I found it very tempting ! It’s a good thing I held off on buying the first gen Apple iPhone because according to many it lacks some features and capabilities. But this doesn't mean the first-generation iPhone didn't sell well. According to my research, Apple has sold 6 million iPhone units worldwide, which is just enough to make Apple extremely competitive in the cellphone market. The launch of Apple iPhone 3G is a different story. Many people I know have tongues wagging everywhere when it was showcased on TV. Should you line up again, when the iPhone 3G becomes available this July? Let’s start with the hardware. The iPhone 3G is identical to the original iPhone. It has a high quality, high resolution 480 x 320 3.5-inch display that's just so easy to fall in love with. It’s now more symmetrical with a plastic body – maybe because the iPhone has so many radios, frequencies, and antenna needs.I don’t think people will care much about Apple ditching the original aluminum, because for me the plastic feel pretty solid as it is not flimsy, compared to other handsets made out of plastic.
Its body is slightly thicker than the original iPhone and comes with a new shape. With its new shape, you won’t be able to use your original device's dock. Since it’s now 3G, expect better call quality and a faster data connection. The best thing probably about this iPhone 3G is that the headphone jack is now flush, meaning any standard headphones will now work in the iPhone without a need to use an adapter. Its new jack feels solid, it won't leave you worrying about damaging the device or your headphones. Now let’s get to the what’s inside, the software. The iPhone 3G and the second installment of mobile OS X have given the Apple iPhone 3G lots of new features while exceeding users’ expectations whilst not slowing down the experience, nor overwhelm new users. With iPhone 3G, you’ll certainly like the App Store, this is where you can purchase or download applications, games that made it through Apple's extensive developer screening and software testing process. The applications available in the Apple App Store vary in price, and can be purchased only after you've logged in with your iTunes account. You need to have an iTunes account even if you need to download a Free application. The App Store auto notifies users regarding updates and also manages all your downloads. Another significant addition to iPhone 3G is character recognition support for logographic-based languages including Traditional Chinese. There are also localized keyboards for over 2 dozen languages and markets around the Globe. Its keyboard seems to be better compared to the one’s from the original iPhone. Maybe Apple has tweaked some settings making typing a little faster and a lot easier. By the way, the iPhone 3G now comes with a SIM-card feature – this is really great for international use. As far as I Know AT&T will allow you to unlock the device for international use, whether you are just going to use it to access the web while overseas or just want to swap a SIM card (after an unspecified period of time). And since the iPhone software developer's kit has been made available with the release of iPhone 3G, I see potential for amazing, useful, fun apps to come out in the future. By the way here are some new and noteworthy Apple iPhone 3G features. Its Google Maps now shows a pinging blue locator that tracks your movement. Its camera now comes with a GPS feature, that will allow you to geotag photos with your current location. It can now read PowerPoint presentations, numbers, and Keynote documents. However, it is still incapable of editing or creating new documents. Here’s one of the coolest things about the iPhone 3G, you can now save the images from the web to the camera simply by tapping and holding. Its existing calculator app can be switched into scientific mode, by just tilting the device sideways. Keying passwords is now easier! Why? the last character you have inputted is temporarily shown at the end of the string. You can now set colors on your Calendar too and control email, contact, and calendar fetching from system settings. There’s also Parental Controls, screen capture which can be done by holding the home button, then the sleep button. OK, let’s wrap it up…Let’s start with the good news. The Apple iPhone 3G features support for high-speed 3G networks. It also supports third party apps and has expanded e-mail. It has a sharper call quality and still provides an excellent audio and video experience. Now, the bad news. The Apple iPhone 3G still lacks some basic features that can be found even on cheaper cell phones. Its battery life has been improved yet it is now uneven, many are saying that the 3G connection seems to be shaky, and also, the e-mail synchronization is not without its faults. Still no copy paste, easily replaceable battery, A2DP, Push Gmail, free way to sync data directly to a machine, new tab option in Safari, and lots of ActiveSync / Exchange features. Anyway, iPhone 3G for me is still stands out from the rest of the pack. And yes, there are still things that could be improved, and fixes that should be applied -- but from first to second gen, Apple has once again proven itself as a relentless company in the mobile industry - not showing any signs of slowing down. Admittedly, not everyone can afford to buy an iPhone 3G, but here’s the thing – The Apple iPhone 3G is not just a cellphone as it is an all around device a true and legit smartphone that can do almost anything. The iPhone 3G stays true to its promises with new critical features and a much better call quality. The iTunes App Store is awesome too, not to mention its 3G support. Yes, there are some critical features that still are missing, and still the battery drains quickly. But then again, the Apple iPhone 3G is a big improvement over the first generation Apple iPhone – the original model.![]() ![]()
